A bathroom is the one room where the plumbing, the waterproofing and the tiles have to be right together. The visit measures the room, checks the floor falls, the waste positions, the water pressure and where the geyser feeds from.

Shower Waterproofing Under the Tiles

Grout and tiles let water through, slowly. Shower waterproofing puts a membrane on the floor and walls of the wet zone, with reinforcing tape at the corners and around the drain, and turns it up the walls behind the tiles. A failed membrane shows up as damp skirting next to the shower, lifting floor tiles or a stain in the room behind. Shower tiling over the membrane is set out under tilers in Pretoria, and a shower that already leaks into a wall is traced first through leak detection in Pretoria.

Walk-In Showers and Bath-to-Shower Conversions

For a tiled walk-in shower without a tray, the quote specifies the screed falls, drain and waterproofing system. Ask the quote to show the screed fall, the drain type (round or linear), the glass panel and whether the waste moves. In an older house a moved waste point is the item that changes the price most; guide B1 lists it at R3,000 to R6,000 per point.

Toilet Installation and Bathroom Plumbing

Toilet installation covers a floor-standing or wall-hung pan, its cistern, the angle valve and the waste connection. Section 30(1) of the City of Tshwane Water Supply By-laws (2014) says only a plumber, or a person working under a plumber's control, may do installation work beyond repairing or replacing an existing pipe or fitting. Section 30(3) allows the Municipality to permit a non-plumber to work on premises they own and occupy solely with their immediate household, subject to inspection and approval by a plumber at the Engineer's direction. Section 32 requires every water installation to comply with SANS 10252-1. The quote names who does and signs off the plumbing.

The hot water comes from the geyser, so a renovation is the time to check its age, valves and drip tray. Geyser work is quoted under geyser installation in Pretoria.

What the Bathroom Quote Lists

The quote lists the strip-out, each plumbing point, the screed, the waterproofing area, the tiling area in m², the fittings (supplied by the homeowner or by Pretoria Home Repairs) and rubble removal. Any electrical work is arranged and quoted separately by the homeowner's electrician. Under section 57 of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008, a repair's new or reconditioned parts, and the labour that fitted them, carry three months of statutory cover from the installation date. Misuse cancels that cover, and normal wear and tear falls outside it.

Roof, ceiling and leak work on the same house is listed under home renovations in Pretoria. To book the measure, request a quote.

Pretoria Home Repairs: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Pretoria?

A 2026 Pretoria guide lists bathroom renovations at R15,000 to R80,000 for tiling, plumbing, electrical and painting. A second Pretoria guide, last reviewed in July 2026, lists a full strip and replace at R2,500 to R6,500 per m².

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

A full bathroom renovation is planned in stages: strip-out, plumbing, screeds, waterproofing, tiling and fit-out. The written quote gives the order of work, and the waterproofing and screeds need drying time before tiles go on.

Do I need a plumber for a bathroom renovation in Pretoria?

Yes, for new plumbing. Section 30(1) of the City of Tshwane Water Supply By-laws (2014) says only a plumber, or a person working under a plumber's control, may do installation work other than repairing or replacing an existing pipe or fitting. Section 30(3) allows the Municipality to permit a non-plumber to work on premises they own and occupy solely with their immediate household, subject to inspection and approval by a plumber at the Engineer's direction.

Can a bath be replaced with a walk-in shower?

Yes. The bath is removed, the waste is moved or re-used, the floor is screeded to fall to the drain, the area is waterproofed and the shower is tiled. Moving a waste point in an older house adds R3,000 to R6,000 per point in a Pretoria guide last reviewed in July 2026.

Does a bathroom renovation include electrical work?

No. Pretoria Home Repairs does not do electrical work. Lights, plugs and extractor fans are arranged and quoted separately by the homeowner's electrician.

Is shower waterproofing really needed under tiles?

Yes. Tiles and grout are not waterproof on their own. A membrane under the tiles stops water reaching the wall, the floor and the room next door.
